About this collection

David Enoch Beem (1837-1923) was a native of Spencer, Indiana who studied law before enlisting in the 14th Indiana Volunteer Regiment in April 1961. During his military service, Beem was promoted to First Lieutenant in August, 1861, and to Captain in May, 1862. He fought Civil War battles at Rich Mountain, Cheat Mountain, Winchester, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. After three years of service, he left the military in June, 1864. This collection is comprised of letters from Beem to his fiancée/wife and other family and friends while he served in the Union Army in Virginia, as well as Civil War documents relating to his service and the 14th Indiana Regiment.
