About this collection

Froebel High School in Gary, Indiana was touted as the first in the city to accept blacks, even though they were segregated in all areas. In the 1940s Principal Richard Nuzum was making strides toward integration. Nationwide tensions led to a walkout by white students on September 18, 1945. Efforts to resolve the situation included visits by celebrities. This collection contains petitions signed by Gary residents which support Principal Nuzum's efforts as well as condemning agreements made without input from black residents. Addresses of signatories are included on the petitions.
