Description |
Willam Hayden English, 1822-1896, was a businessman and politician who served 4 terms in the U.S. Congress. In 1880 he was the Democratic candidate for vice-president. He and his wife Emma Mardulia English had 2 children, William Eastin English and Rose English Walling. In 1864 he purchased the W.S. Hubbard residence at Number 60 Circle Street. He built the English Opera House in 1880 and later enlarged it to inlcude a hotel. In 1886 he moved into an apartment at the hotel and rented out the family residence until 1897 when it was demolished to allow a further expansion of the hotel. |
