Description |
War in Europe called for a munitions testing locale for the U.S. Army. The site in southeast Indiana was selected due to its proximity to 95% of the munitions producing plants in the country, a favorable climate, good transportation services, and land availability. Lt. Col. Derosey Cabell was assigned to build and operate the base. Its mission: “Proof Test” all ammunition from 20 mm to 155 mm guns. To do this, more than 2,000 people were forced from their ancestral homes, schools, and churches. |
