Description |
This bird's eye view shows Muncie, Indiana in 1884. The lower portion of the image shows James Boyce and Co. bagging and handle factory, the James Boyce residence, and Boyce Block building. Originally from Ireland, Boyce came to Muncie in 1870 and began to develop machinery for use in the flax industry. In 1871 he obtained a patent for a flax thrashing and separating machine, which he used in his flax-bagging factory, James Boyce and Company. During the next few years his manufacturing interests expanded to include such products as shoes, shovel handles, and rivets. His endeavors proved to be quite successful and he became one of the largest employers in eastern Indiana. |
