Description |
As the legislature convened for the 1939 session, no fewer than 8 bills regarding the gross income tax were introduced. Retailers wanted the gross income tax to be reduced from 1 percent to ½ percent. Backed by the Farm Bureau, farmers opposed such a move. Retailers believed the 1 percent tax was too burdensome and pointed to numerous instances of merchants folding. Farmers were concerned that the loss of income to the state would have to be made up using property taxes, which they believed unfairly shifted extra responsibility to them. Between 6,000 and 20,000 citizens protested at the State House on February 23, 1939. Standing side by side they voiced their displeasure at or support of H.B. 47. |
