Description |
Group portrait of parishioners gathered in front of the Englewood Christian Church, located at 57 North Rural Street in Indianapolis, which was taken in honor of the evangelist Rodney "Gypsy" Smith. The popular preacher arrived on March 12, 1921 and was greeted by E. Howard Cadle, who organized the visit. Smith then preached for the next four weeks straight, with attendances as high as 7,500. The experience organizing the event inspired Cadle to build his own tabernacle, which became the Cadle Tabernacle just east of city hall. During the period Smith was in Indianapolis, he must have visited the Englewood Christian Church. It was formed in 1895 with 36 members in a rented hall on the outskirts of Indianapolis. As the church grew this brick structure was built to accommodate the hundreds of new members. The church is still at the same location, but the building has been altered. The building seen to the right is Lucretia Mott School, Public School No. 3 located at 27 North Rural Street. |
