Beem describes the building of a bridge under fire by Confederate artillery as well as giving an account of all the wounded from Spencer, Indiana. He asks his wife to convey the information to their families and assures her that they will all be well. |

Notes |
David E. Beem, 1837-1923, lived in Spencer, Indiana most of his life. His law career was interrupted by service in the Civil War. Beem enlisted as a First Sergeant in the 14th Indiana Volunteer Regiment in 1861 and mustered out as a Captain in 1864. He and Mahala Joslin were married in 1862 and had three children: Minnie M. Zaring, David Joslin Beem, and Levi Amasa Beem. |
