Columbus is the county seat of Bartholomew County. The courthouse there was designed by Issac Hodgson and built in 1874. The building has gone through renovations but most of the original décor has been preserved.

The town of Hope, founded by a young Moravian minister named Martin Hauser in 1830, lies in the northeastern part of the county. Originally called Goshen, the name was changed in 1834 after an earlier Moravian town in North Carolina.
