Osceola was founded in 1872. When the town tried to get a post office, it learned another town by that name existed in Indiana. Considering the acquisition of a post office a big advance to the community, the town coined its new name, Advance.

Jamestown was named for one of its settlers, James Matlock. Main Street, seen in this image, was once part of the original state road between Crawfordsville and Indianapolis. Jamestown prospered as a stage coach change station on the route.
