Description |
Shown here in this family photograph taken in 1965 is Carmen DeRusha, her parents and older sister. Carmen Elisa Centeno Diaz DeRusha was born on November 11, 1959 in the small town of San Mateo, Colombia. Her parents were both teachers that moved around often for their work, but they finally settled their seven children in Tunja, Boyaca, Columbia-where Carmen would spend the majority of her childhood. Carmen's first job out of college was as a counselor in a public school in Colombia called El Colegio de Boyacá. In the mid-1980s, she took a job as Vice Principal of Academic Affairs at a school in Bogota while she worked on her Masters degree in education and social development. It was here that Carmen met her future husband, music conductor Stanley DeRusha. After finishing her degree, Carmen moved to Connecticut to be with Stanley, who worked at Hartt School of Music at the time, and his two children from a previous marriage. While in Connecticut, she got a job with La Casa de Puerto Rico, first as Coordinator, then as Administrator of the family day care home providers. In 1991, Stanley got a job at Butler University in Indianapolis. After settling in to Indianapolis, Carmen went to volunteer for Purdue Extension's work with migrants, but they offered her a job instead, bringing innovation and education to non-traditional audiences. Carmen and Stanley had their son Cris DeRusha in 1995. Carmen still works at Purdue, but has also been involved with many other community development projects-primarily focused on the far East Side. She created Community Alliance for the Far Eastside, CAFE, became the president of FIESTA Indianapolis, contributed to the merging of Indianapolis area Latino organizations into La Plaza, for which she would also serve as Executive Director. |
