DescriptionAnton "Tony" Hulman, a multimillionaire businessman from Terre Haute, Indiana, bought the dilapidated and weed-choked race track in 1945 and resurrected it as a premier racing facility. Upon Wilbur Shaw's death in 1954, Hulman became president of the Speedway. He continued the tradition popularized by Shaw and began each race with: "Gentleman start your engines."
