DescriptionThe USO was formed in 1941 at the request of President Roosevelt to handle the recreation needs of U.S. armed forces. Six civilian agencies coordinated to form the USO (United Service Organizations). USO centers were a home away from home for GIs. It was a place to dance, meet people, see movies, find religious counsel, talk or write letters, and get free coffee and doughnuts. Hoosiers opened their purse strings so that no soldier, sailor, or marine suffered during the hours spent away from camp.
