DescriptionGovernor Noah Noble, 1831-1837. Through his two terms as governor Noble is best known for promoting internal improvements. As the 5th governor of the state he supported the development of canals and roads, and allowed the incorporation of railroads and surveying of routes. Noble advocated for improved public education, tax reform, and legislative apportionment. A new statehouse was erected in Indianapolis in time for the legislative session 1835-36. Opponents blamed him for placing the state deeply in debt which ultimately led to the drafting of Indiana's second constitution 1850-51, and a provision that prohibited the state from incurring debt. Noble died in Indianapolis in February, 1844.
