DescriptionRalph DePalma nursed his Mercedes to victory in the 1915 race, leaking oil and running on three cylinders. In 1912 DePalma had a two lap lead on the field when the car came to a stop less than a mile from the finish. DePalma and his riding mechanic got out of the car and began pushing. The race winner, Joe Dawson, swept by as driver and mechanic, keeping close to the inside edge of the track, entered the front straightaway and the finish line. The crowd, noticing their approach, exploded into cheers.
