He went on to high school determined to learn about mechanics and by the time he graduated, he had wired his workshop and home for electric lights from a generator he had built. In spite of initial doubts of the faculty, Ralph graduated near the top of his class from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1912.
