DescriptionThis rich collection of color lithographs represents some of the most detailed and lively images of Native Americans contemporary to the period of Indiana's early statehood and settlement. Prior to the existence of modern photography, Lewis' vivid plates provided, perhaps, the only accurate depictions of these peoples while still inhabiting their native lands prior to expulsion. The widely popular Lewis portraits have appeared in many exhibitions and have been the subject of numerous articles.
