DescriptionWilliam Hayden English was a businessman and politician who served four terms in the U.S. Congress. In 1880 he was the Democratic candidate for vice president. He and his wife Emma Mardulia English had two children, William and Rose. In 1864 he purchased the W.S. Hubbard residence at Number 60 Circle Street. He built the English Opera House in 1880 and later enlarged it to include a hotel. In 1886 after his wife's death he moved into an apartment at the hotel and rented out the family residence until 1897, when it was demolished to allow a further expansion of the hotel.
