| Description | Dunning was born in North Carolina in 1806 and moved to Bloomington, Indiana in 1823. As lieutenant governor, he became governor when Whitcomb left for the Senate. His one year as governor was noteworthy for resisting expansion of slavery into free territories and expanding public education. Later he practiced law, raised troops for the Union during the Civil War, and served as state senator. He died in 1884 and was buried in Bloomington. |
