DescriptionThe J.M. White was built in Jeffersonville, Indiana, in 1878, and said to be the finest side-wheel cotton packet ever built. It burned December 13, 1886, at Point Coupee Parish in Louisiana. A cargo of gunpowder in the hold exploded and blazing timbers were hurled everywhere.
