DescriptionFive members of the Spiceland Academy Baseball Team pose in the photographer's studio. African American John "Snowball" Merida is in the group. It is thought that the man on the right is J. Estes Ratcliff. The players wear uniforms with "Spiceland" across the front and lounge on the floor with mitts, masks, and baseballs. One player wears a tag around his neck that says "Base Ball 1900."

NotesThe man holding the baseball is also in Plates 84, 161 and 170. In Henry County, Spiceland Academy's baseball team around 1900 included John Merida (far left). He went on to play with the Indianapolis ABCs from 1907–1910 and was the team's best offensive player. He played as second baseman and as catcher. He began the 1911 season with the Kansas City Royal Giants, but died suddenly of a heart attack. He was buried in the Quaker cemetery in Spiceland.
