Lew
Wallace's
Eleventh
Indiana
Volunteer
Infantry
Regiment
was the
first
to
organize
and
march.
It
swore
to
avenge
the
charge
of
cowardice
that had
disgraced
the
Indiana
regiments
at the
Battle
of
Buena
Vista
during
the
Mexican
War.
This
newspaper
illustration
shows
the
Eleventh
Indiana
and a
crowd
gathered
in
front
of the
state
capitol
building.
Most
of the
soldiers
are
resting
on
one
knee
and have their
right
arm
extended.
