| Description | Indiana was the location of one of the only two forays by Confederate troops into northern territory during the Civil War. Gen. John Hunt Morgan and his raiders captured Salem, on July 10, 1863, burned the depot, cut telegraph wires, and demanded ransom from merchants for sparing their stores. The raiders moved on eastward the same day. |
