| Bibliography/Notes | Peru, Indiana native, Emil Schram was the president of the New York Stock Exchange from 1941 to 1951 and an advisor to four presidents. A descendant of German immigrants, he started out in high school working as an office boy for a member of the Cole family in Peru. After graduation he wanted to attend college and study business but could not afford the tuition. He married, started a family, and continued working for the Cole family for 18 years managing a 5, 000 acre farm in Illinois. During the 1920s he became involved with lobbying Congress about flood control and by 1941 he was the Chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation in Washington D.C. He was appointed president of the New York Stock Exchange in 1941 and re-established public confidence in that institution after the Depression years and through the post-war business boom. After retiring from the Stock Exchange in 1951 he remained active in business pursuits here in Indiana and was the president of the U.S.O. for several years |
