Notable ForLilly was born in Maryland. His family eventually settled in Greencastle, Indiana. He began working in a drug store there then served as a Colonel in the Civil War. After the war he tried starting drug stores in other places. He moved to Indianapolis and opened a pharmaceutical laboratory. It became a leading business in the city. He was interested in the development of the city and helped found the Commercial Club.
