	Eli Lilly Name Eli Lilly Birth/Death Dates 1838-1898 Where in Indiana Putnum County--Greencastle When in Indiana 1852-1898 Notable For Lilly was born in Maryland. His family eventually settled in Greencastle, Indiana. He began working in a drug store there then served as a Colonel in the Civil War. After the war he tried starting drug stores in other places. He moved to Indianapolis and opened a pharmaceutical laboratory. It became a leading business in the city. He was interested in the development of the city and helped found the Commercial Club. Description Lt. Colonel Lilly is the gentleman with a mustache seated on the right. Col. Jackson is on the left and has a dark beard. Jackson has a book in his lap and one hand resting on Lilly's knee.
