Notable For
Etheridge
Knight
was
born
in
Mississippi
. He was in the
Army
and
served
in the
Korean
Conflict
. He was
seriously
wounded
there
causing
him to
become
addicted
to
drugs
and
alcohol
. He
turned
to
crime
to
support
these
addictions
and was
jailed
in the
Indiana
State
Prison
in
1960
for
armed
robbery
.
Knight
began
to
write
poetry
while
in
prison
. His
first
poem
titled
"To
Dinah
Washington
" was
published
in
July
1965
in "
Negro
Digest
."
After
his
release
from
prison
he
continued
to
write
poetry
and
eventually
published
5
books
. He
gave
poetry
readings
and was
poet
or
writer
-in-
residence
at
several
colleges
. He
received
numerous
awards
including
the
Shelley
Award
from the
Poetry
Society
of
America
.
