Notable ForEtheridge Knight was born in Mississippi. He was in the Army and served in the Korean Conflict. He was seriously wounded there causing him to become addicted to drugs and alcohol. He turned to crime to support these addictions and was jailed in the Indiana State Prison in 1960 for armed robbery. Knight began to write poetry while in prison. His first poem titled "To Dinah Washington, " was published in July 1965 in "Negro Digest." After his release from prison he continued to write poetry and eventually published 5 books. He gave poetry readings and was poet or writer-in-residence at several colleges. He received numerous awards including the Shelley Award from the Poetry Society of America.
