Centerville

Iowa
in
1917
. His
family
moved
to
Gary
,
Indiana
in
1930
. He
quit
high
school
to
work
in the
steel
mill
and
got
his
first
camera
as a
teenager
. In
1936
he
went
to
work
as an
apprentice
photographer
for the
Gary
Post
Tribune
. He was
drafted
into the
Army
in
1941
and
worked
for "
Yank
"
magazine
. The
magazine
was
run
by
enlisted
men
and
devoted
to them. His
photographs
were
well
known
by
soldiers
and
people
back
home
. He was
killed
covering
the
invasion
of
Eniwetok
in the
Marshall
Islands
, in
February
,
1944
.
