Notable ForHarrison, the grandson of President William Henry Harrison, moved to Indiana from Ohio in 1854. He was a lawyer and was active in politics. He was in the 70th Indiana Infantry in the Civil War reaching the rank of brevet brigadier general. In 1881 he was elected to the U.S. Senate. In 1888 he was elected president; defeating Grover Cleveland. During his administration important legislation was passed including the McKinley Tariff Act, Sherman Anti-Trust Act, and federal aid to veterans. He was defeated for re-election in 1892 and returned to Indianapolis.
