Notable ForEhrmann was born in Terre Haute, Indiana. He attended DePauw University and edited the DePauw Weekly. He later studied law and philosophy at Harvard. He worked as a lawyer at his brother's overall factory in Terre Haute, but really wanted to be a writer. He wrote "A Prayer" in 1903. It was displayed at the 1904 World's Fair, and published in the Congressional Record in 1909. He wrote the prose poem "Desiderata" in 1927. In 1971 a recording of the poem Desiderata made it to the Top 10 chart, and won a Grammy Award the following year.
