	Elwood Haynes Name Elwood Haynes Birth/Death Dates 1857-1925 Where in Indiana Jay County--Portland ; Howard County-- Kokomo When in Indiana 1857-1925 Notable For Haynes is responsible for the first commercially built gasoline-powered automobile in Indiana. It was built in 1894 while he was manager of the Indiana Natural Gas and Oil Company. He also discovered stellite in 1906, and stainless steel in 1911. Description Haynes is standing with a 1904 Haynes Pioneer automobile. A stone marker commemorates the automobile.
