Notable ForOtis "Doc" Bowen, M.D. began his career as a family physician and went on to serve in the Indiana legislature and then as Indiana's governor from 1973 to 1981. In 1985 he was nominated by president Ronald Reagan to serve as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, a position he held until January 1989. Two reports submitted by Bowen's surgeon general, C. Everett Koop, M.D. have become milestones in the history of tobacco control.
