| Notable For | Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis. He attended Cornell University but left to enlist in the Army during World War II. Vonnegut was captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge and witnessed the firebombing of Dresden, Germany, in which 135,000 civilians were killed. His Dresden experience became the basis for the novel Slaughterhouse-Five, which brought him national acclaim. Vonnegut sold his first story to Collier's magazine in 1950 and his first novel, The Piano Player, was published in 1952. His books include Cat's Cradle, God Bless You Mr. Rosewater, Breakfast of Champions, Palm Sunday, Galapagos, Hocus Pocus, and Timequake. |
