Notable ForDebs was a founder of the American Railway Union and served as the Union's first president. He organized the Social Democratic Party of America in 1897, and ran for the U.S. Presidency in 1900, 1904, 1908, 1912, and 1920. He was convicted of violation of the Espionage Act in 1918 and sentenced to ten years in prison. President Harding pardoned him in 1921.
