Notable ForWallace served in the Mexican War from 1846-1847. He returned to Indiana and was admitted to the bar in 1849. He established his law practice in Indianapolis and was elected to the State Senate in 1856. In 1861 Governor Morton appointed him adjutant general. Wallace went on to have a distinguished military career. He was a member of the court-martial that tried the conspirators in the Lincoln assassination in 1865. In 1876 he was a member of the committee that oversaw the counting of disputed ballots in the presidential election. From 1878-1881 Wallace served as Governor of the New Mexico Territory. In 1881 he was appointed U.S. Minister to Turkey, and stayed in that job until 1885. Wallace authored several books including Ben Hur.
