Notable ForMariah Bowerstock Mendenhall was a midwife from 1840-1900. Some time during the mid-1890s she figured she had assisted with 980 births. In her records she notes that she never had a woman die while in her care. She always went when someone called for her help. In addition she nursed neighbors through illnesses. She and her family lived on a farm in Penn Township where they raised sheep and flax.
