Notable For
Tecumseh
was
born
in the
Shawnee
town
of
Piqua
,
Ohio.
His
brother
Tenskwatawa
, or The
Prophet
, were
important
Shawnee
leaders.
When
the
Treaty
of
Greenville
was
signed
giving
most
of
Ohio
to
whites
,
Indian
tribes
had to
move
to
Indiana.
He
began
forming
an
Indian
federation
saying
Indian
lands
should be
considered
common
property
and
none
should be
sold
without
the
consent
of
all.
He
nearly
succeeded
in
creating
a
very
strong
Indian
force.
His
tribe
was
defeated
by
William
Henry
Harrison
at the
Battle
of
Tippecanoe
in
1811.
He was
killed
at the
Battle
of the
Thames
in
1813.
