Owen
bought
the
town
they
called
Harmony
and
renamed
it
New
Harmony
. His
followers
were
given
the
name
Harmonists
.
Owen
hoped
to
establish
a
new
social
order
. He
brought
famous
teachers
and
scientists
to
New
Harmony
. In
1827
he
dissolved
the
community
and
returned
to
Scotland
. The
community
continued
to
attract
people
interested
in
Owen's
orginal
ideas
. The
first
kindergarten
and
trade
school
in
America
were
founded
there
along
with the
first
public
school
system
offering
equal
education
to
boys
and
girls
. The
first
headquarters
of the
United
States
Geological
Survey
was also
located
there.
