Notable ForWhen the Rappites decided to return to Pennsylvania, Robert Owen bought the town they called Harmony and renamed it New Harmony. His followers were given the name Harmonists. Owen hoped to establish a new social order. He brought famous teachers and scientists to New Harmony. In 1827 he dissolved the community and returned to Scotland. The community continued to attract people interested in Owen's orginal ideas. The first kindergarten and trade school in America were founded there along with the first public school system offering equal education to boys and girls. The first headquarters of the United States Geological Survey was also located there.
