When in IndianaHis family moved to Indiana when he was a teenager.
Notable ForColfax clerked in the family store as a teenager. The store was also the town post office. He decided on a career in journalism and politics. He became a newspaper editor in South Bend, Indiana, and was a member of the Indiana Constitutional Convention of 1850-51. He served seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives serving as Speaker of the House during three of those terms. From 1869-1873 he served as vice president under Ulysess S. Grant. His chances for renomination as vice-president were destroyed by charges of involvement in the Credit Mobilier scandal during Grant's first term. After that he began traveling and lecturing.
