a
reporter
for the
LaPorte
Herald.
From there he
moved
on to a
job
at the
Washington
(D.C.)
Daily
News
,
part
of the
Scripps-Howard
newspaper
chain.
He
became
managing
editor
there.
After
3
years
in that
job
he
became
a
roving
reporter
for
them.
His
articles
were
collected
and
published
as a
book
"Home
Country."
In
1940
he
went
to
England
to
report
on the
Battle
of
Britain.
His
experiences
there were
published
in
another
book
,
"Ernie
Pyle
in
England"
in
1941.
A
year
later
he
began
covering
America's
participation
in the
war.
One
of his
columns
resulted
in
Congress
enacting
a
bill
giving
soldiers
combat
pay.
Pyle
was
sent
to
cover
the
war
in the
Pacific
and was
killed
in an
ambush
on Ie
Shima
, an
island
just
west
of
Okinawa.
