Notable ForKnown for her poetry, including her classic "Paddle Your Own Canoe" Sarah Bolton began writing at a young age and contributed poems to newspapers and to the Home Journal. She was poet laureate of Indiana during the 1840s and 1850s, and published some songs. Bolton worked on behalf of women's rights in the Hoosier State during the mid-nineteenth century, especially the right to own property. She and her husband lived in Geneva, Switzerland, while he was consul there during President Franklin Pierce's administration.
