	Richard Jordan Gatling Name Richard Jordan Gatling Birth/Death Dates 1818-1903 Where in Indiana Marion County--Indianapolis When in Indiana 1854-mid-1870s Notable For In 1862 Gatling invented and patented the first Gatling gun, a hand-cranked rapid fire weapon with 10 revolving barrels. Due to production problems the weapon was not used during the Civil War, but later sold well. It was used in armed conflicts over the next fifty years. Description Gatling is wearing a dark suit with a white shirt and dark bow tie. He has gray hair and a full beard.
