Notable ForSteele began drawing as a child and at the age of 12 was teaching schoolmates. With the financial support of friends, he and his family went to Germany where he studied art at the Munich Royal Academy. When he returned to Indiana he painted portraits and landscapes, becoming best known for his landscapes. In addition he taught classes and gave speeches about painting. He loved his home state and settled in Brown County where he built his home called the House of the Singing Winds. Steele's presence in Brown County attracted other artists to the area and it became an artist colony.
