Notable For
Steele
began
drawing
as a
child
and at the
age
of
12
was
teaching
schoolmates
. With the
financial
support
of
friends
, he and his
family
went
to
Germany
where
he
studied
art
at the
Munich
Royal
Academy
.
When
he
returned
to
Indiana
he
painted
portraits
and
landscapes
,
becoming
best
known
for his
landscapes
. In
addition
he
taught
classes
and
gave
speeches
about
painting
. He
loved
his
home
state
and
settled
in
Brown
County
where
he
built
his
home
called
the
House
of the
Singing
Winds
.
Steele's
presence
in
Brown
County
attracted
other
artists
to the
area
and
it
became
an
artist
colony
.
Description

has a

and
long
dark
hair
.
