Bell

spacecraft
in
July
1961
. This was the
final
suborbital
Mercury
test
flight
of the
craft
. In
March
1965
he was the
command
pilot
on the
first
manned
Gemini
flight
. He was to
serve
as
command
pilot
for the
first
3
-
man
Apollo
flight
, but was
killed
in the
Apollo
spacecraft
flash
fire
during
a
launch
pad
test
in
January
,
1967
.
