Notable ForTony was born in Terre Haute but then attended private schools in the east. After graduating from Yale University's Scientific School in 1924 with a degree in engineering, he returned to Terre Haute to join the family business. Tony's grandfather, Herman Hulman, started Hulman & Company in 1897 producing a series of baking powders including Clabber Girl - which remains the company's main product. Tony Hulman became a multimillionaire in his business adventures. He purchased the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1945 and made numerous improvements. As president of the Speedway he began each race with "Gentlemen, start your engines."
