| Notes | Although the daily newspapers gave detailed written accounts of the execution, there was little time to create woodcuts to accompany the stories. To see for themselves what had happened, the public had to wait for the illustrated weeklies, closely followed by cartes-de-visite, stereo cards, pamphlets, lithographs, and glass lantern slides. Harper's Weekly had an advantage over its competitors, however: the cooperation of Alexander Gardner, as evidenced by his note "To Engraver-Harper's Weekly, " on the back of the image titled "Adjusting the Ropes." |
