| Description | Alex Vraciu of East Chicago, Indiana, flew for the U.S. Navy in the Pacific on a variety of aircraft carriers. By war's end, Vraciu had shot down nineteen Japanese planes, destroyed another twenty-one aircraft on the ground, and sank an enemy merchant ship. For a time, he was the leading Navy Ace in the Pacific. He was awarded the Navy Cross. |
