DescriptionWhile a bugler plays "Taps, " the remains of Ernie Pyle are laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl Crater, Oahu, Hawaii, on July 19, 1949. The famed Hoosier war correspondent had become beloved through his newspaper columns about the average G.I. during the war. He was killed by Japanese gunfire while covering the invasion of Okinawa on April 18, 1945.
